Abnormal foot biomechanics is a major contributing factor in the development of pain and injury in children’s feet, ankles, knees and legs. Our paediatric podiatrists have undertaken advanced training in the assessment of children for biomechanical or gait abnormalities that may be causing pain or injury.

Foot and leg biomechanics incorporates a comprehensive evaluation of the structure, alignment and function of the feet and legs while standing and during walking. The information gained from the biomechanical assessment and gait analysis helps our Podiatrist’s to recommend the most effective treatment program for your child’s specific problem.

A biomechanical assessment helps to determine if your child will benefit from orthotic therapy, stretching or strengthening exercises, footwear changes, balance exercises, splinting or other forms of therapy. This individualized approach to assessment and treatment of children provides targeted and effective relief of painful symptoms, prompt recovery from injury and promotes a more efficient gait pattern.

A biomechanical assessment for children involves the following:

  • Foot Posture Index
  • Alignment of the foot, ankle, knee and leg
  • Visual gait analysis – using slow motion video analysis
  • Joint flexibility, including screening for Joint Hypermobility (Beighton Score)
  • Foot and leg muscle strength testing – to detect muscle imbalances and weakness
  • Balance control and pelvic stability tests
  • Screening for limb length discrepancy
  • Screening of age-dependant gross motor skills
